The Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) Faculty Fellowship is the Department of Science and Technology’s (DST) flagship program to stop “brain drain” and keep India’s best scientific minds at home. While most post-doc positions keep you under a supervisor, this fellowship makes you the boss of your own research.

📅 1. The 2026 Timeline: Don’t Miss the Window
DST usually releases the official “Call for Applications” once a year. Based on the 2026 schedule, here is what to expect:
-
Applications Open: July/August 2026.
-
Deadline: Typically September 2026.
-
Selection Process: A rigorous three-tier review (Discipline Expert Committee, Apex Committee, and DST final approval).
-
Results: Expect the final list by January/February 2027.
Pro-Tip: Today, on National Science Day, DST often releases updates or success stories of previous fellows. It’s a great day to browse the and see which research areas are getting the most traction.
💰 2. The Financial Package (Breakdown)
The funding is massive, designed to give you total financial independence so you can focus 100% on your experiments.
-
Monthly Fellowship: ₹1,25,000 (Consolidated and taxable).
-
Annual Increment: ₹2,000 per year.
-
Research Grant: ₹7,00,000 per year. Over 5 years, that is ₹35 Lakhs to spend on equipment, consumables, and international travel.
-
Total Duration: 5 Years (Non-extendable).
✅ 3. Are You Eligible? (The Strict Filters)
NITI Aayog and DST are famous for their “High-Bar” eligibility. If you don’t meet these, your application won’t even reach the human reviewers.
-
Education: PhD in Science, Maths, Engineering, Pharmacy, Medicine, or Agriculture.
-
Marks: Minimum 60% (or 6.0 CGPA) consistently from Class 12 all the way to your PhD.
-
Age Limit (as of Jan 1, 2026):
-
General/OBC: Max 32 years.
-
SC/ST/Women: Max 37 years.
-
PWD: Max 42 years.
-
-
Publication Record: You need first-author papers in high-impact SCI journals. For the “Translational Research” category, you need at least two patents filed or one granted.
🏛️ 4. The “Host Institute” Strategy
You cannot be a “freelance” fellow. You must be hosted by an Indian academic or R&D institution.
-
Independence Rule: You generally cannot stay in the same lab where you did your PhD. DST wants to see you grow outside your supervisor’s shadow.
-
The Consent Letter: You need a formal letter from the Registrar or Director of the host institute promising you lab space and basic infrastructure. Start reaching out to HODs now.
📂 5. How to Build a Winning Proposal
Selection is 10% your CV and 90% your Research Proposal.
-
Novelty: Don’t just propose a “continuation” of your PhD. Propose something that solves a specific gap in Indian S&T.
-
Feasibility: Ensure your 5-year plan is realistic for the ₹35 Lakh budget.
-
Translational Value: In 2026, DST is heavily prioritizing research that can lead to startups or patents. If your work has an “industry” angle, highlight it.

FAQ (The “Real Talk”)
Q: I have a permanent job already. Can I apply? A: Yes, but you will only receive the Research Grant (₹7 Lakh/year), not the monthly fellowship.
Q: Can I move my fellowship to a different city later? A: Yes, but it’s a paperwork nightmare. You’ll need an NOC from your current host and an invitation from the new one. It’s better to choose a “forever home” for those 5 years.
Q: What happens after 5 years? A: The fellowship does not guarantee a permanent job. However, nearly 80% of INSPIRE fellows get absorbed into permanent faculty positions at IITs, IISERs, or Central Universities before their tenure ends.

Age limit should be increased to 45. Most of the male PhD holders from middle class or lower economic conditions gain PhD by 35-37 depending on the problem statement. Most of the times they hav to earn for higher studies which may include discontinuation or breaks for earning in their educational journey.
Those who finish it by age of 32 can most of the times have the economical condition to sustain their education.
Those who are not from the reservation quota has to earn for the payment of fees and expenses for research especially chemistry and physics which involves a lot of expenditure on materials characterization such as XRD,FTIR, FESEM, tem and XPS which are not available in most of the institutions and if available, those are payed services.
So considering this they deserve a fair chance for DST inspire award, which is only possible if age limit goes high upto 45 years.
After fulfilling all the formalities my ward has applied for level 2 DST inspire fellowship on Feb 8, 2026. how can i know the status of application and when will be the next list will be out?
