What PMRC Actually Is
PMRC is a national talent-repatriation initiative. It creates a direct pathway for top-tier Indian-origin researchers at globally renowned foreign universities, private labs, and tech companies to take up high-level research positions at premier Indian institutions — without having to go through a conventional faculty hiring process.
The scheme runs across 13 thematic areas of national priority, including Advanced Computing (AI, Quantum Computing & Supercomputing), among others tied to India’s strategic technology goals.

Only specific institutions can host PMRC Fellows:

- National laboratories and research institutions under DST, DBT, ICMR, CSIR, and similar bodies
Seven institutions have been designated as Lead Institutions to coordinate implementation across thematic areas: IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, and IISc Bengaluru.
Host Institutions with a strong track record in industry-academia linkages, patent commercialisation, and research infrastructure get preference for hosting PMRC Fellows.
