Here’s something most engineering graduates don’t realize — you don’t always need to crack a written exam to get into DRDO.
Sometimes, they just call you in for a walk-in interview.
Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), a premier DRDO lab based in Bengaluru, has announced a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) 2026 for candidates from Computer Science Engineering and Electrical Engineering backgrounds. The fellowship pays ₹37,000 per month plus House Rent Allowance — and selection happens through a walk-in interview on 9 June 2026.
There’s no lengthy application portal. No registration fee. Just an email by 30 May 2026 confirming you’ll attend, and showing up at the LRDE gate by 9:30 AM on the interview day.
If you have a first-division B.Tech with GATE — or an M.Tech in first division — this is one of the better research opportunities you’ll come across this year. Let’s break it all down.
What Is LRDE and What Will You Actually Work On?
LRDE — Electronics and Radar Development Establishment — is one of DRDO’s specialized labs focused on Radar systems and related defence technologies. It sits inside a sprawling campus in CV Raman Nagar, Bengaluru, and works on some of India’s most critical radar and electronic warfare systems.
As a Junior Research Fellow here, you’re not doing admin work or literature reviews in a corner. JRFs at DRDO labs are embedded in active research projects. You work alongside scientists, handle real technical problems, and contribute to work that actually matters for national defence.
For anyone seriously considering a research career — whether in academia or government R&D — two to four years at LRDE is a foundation that’s hard to replicate anywhere else.

Eligibility — Who Can Apply
Only two disciplines are open this cycle. Check your qualification carefully before emailing them.
For Both CSE and Electrical Engineering:
Option 1 — B.Tech / B.E. Route:
- First division in B.Tech / B.E. in the respective discipline from a recognized university
- Valid GATE score is mandatory for this route
Option 2 — M.Tech / M.E. Route:
- First division in both your B.Tech AND M.Tech in the respective subject
- Both degrees must be first division — not just the PG
Age Limit:
- Below 28 years as on 1 June 2026
- Age relaxation applicable for SC/ST/OBC candidates as per Government of India rules
Nationality: Indian nationals only
⚡ Important: LRDE has not listed equivalent qualifications as acceptable. Your degree must be specifically in CSE or Electrical Engineering. If your branch is “Electronics & Communication” or “Information Technology,” double-check with LRDE at 080-25025312 before sending your willingness email.
The Fellowship — What ₹37,000 + HRA Looks Like in Bengaluru
Let’s be real about this. ₹37,000 per month as a JRF stipend is significantly better than most entry-level engineering salaries in government setups — and the HRA on top of that is calculated based on your posting city.
Bengaluru falls under a higher HRA bracket, so your actual monthly take-home as an LRDE JRF will be noticeably more than the base ₹37,000.
The fellowship is initially for 2 years, and can be extended up to 4 years based on your performance and the research requirements of the project. That’s a stable, well-paid research stint — and at the end of it, your profile for a Scientist ‘B’ exam or a PhD admission anywhere in India looks considerably stronger.
One thing to keep in mind upfront: LRDE has explicitly stated that the JRF does not give you any right to absorption into DRDO. The fellowship is a research position, not a backdoor to a permanent job. That said, many JRFs do go on to crack DRDO’s Scientist recruitment separately — the experience helps enormously.
How to Apply — Step by Step
This process is simpler than most DRDO applications, but it has specific steps you cannot skip.
Step 1: Send Your Willingness Email Before 30 May 2026
Email your intent to attend the walk-in interview to: 📧 [email protected]
The subject line of your email must follow this exact format: “Application for the post of JRF – [Subject]”
For example:
- CSE candidate: “Application for the post of JRF – Computer Science & Engineering”
- EE candidate: “Application for the post of JRF – Electrical Engineering”
Getting the subject line wrong is a surprisingly common mistake. LRDE uses it to sort applications by discipline — an incorrect subject line may mean your email gets missed.
Step 2: Download and Fill the Application Form
Fill the application form in the prescribed format from the advertisement. It needs:
- Personal details (name, DOB, gender, nationality)
- Educational qualifications with percentage (10th onwards)
- GATE details: Enrolment No., year, score, marks out of 100, rank, validity
- Work experience if any
- Permanent and correspondence address
- Category (SC/ST/OBC/PwD if applicable)
- Recent passport size color photograph affixed on the top right corner
One field students often leave blank — GATE validity. Make sure your GATE score is still valid as on the interview date (9 June 2026). An expired GATE score disqualifies the B.Tech route application.
Step 3: Prepare Your Documents for the Interview Day
Carry all of the following in original plus one self-attested photocopy each:
- ✅ Filled application form with photo
- ✅ All educational certificates (10th, 12th, B.Tech, M.Tech)
- ✅ All semester mark sheets in original
- ✅ GATE score card
- ✅ Government photo ID: Aadhaar / Passport / PAN / Voter ID
- ✅ Experience certificates (if applicable)
- ✅ NOC from employer (if currently working in a Government Dept / PSU / Autonomous Body)
- ✅ Category certificate if claiming SC/ST/OBC relaxation
- ✅ CGPA to percentage conversion document (if your university uses CGPA)
If any document is in a language other than English, attach a self-attested English translation. LRDE has specifically mentioned this — don’t skip it if it applies to you.
Walk-in Interview Day — What to Expect
The interview is on 9 June 2026 at LRDE’s campus in CV Raman Nagar, Bengaluru.
Report between 8:30 AM and 9:30 AM at the LRDE Main Gate Reception.
This is a hard cutoff. LRDE has stated clearly — candidates arriving after 9:30 AM will not be allowed to participate. No exceptions, no appeals. If you’re travelling from outside Bengaluru, plan to arrive the previous evening.
Here’s the sequence of what happens on the day:
- Document verification — starts from 9:00 AM onwards
- Written test (if deemed necessary by the selection committee)
- Interview — on the same day, after the written test
Come prepared to be tested on your core technical subjects. For CSE candidates, expect questions around algorithms, data structures, computer networks, and possibly radar signal processing basics. For EE candidates, brush up on electromagnetics, signal processing, and circuit theory.
⚡ Pro-Tip: No electronic items are allowed inside the LRDE campus. This means no laptops, tablets, or smartwatches. Keep your mobile phone off or at home if possible — carrying it in creates delays at security. Carry only what you need: documents, pen, and a physical copy of your application.
After the Interview — What Happens Next
LRDE will draw a merit panel based on interview performance. This panel operates for one year and is used to fill current vacancies as well as any future anticipated vacancies that arise during that period.
Being on the panel doesn’t guarantee an offer. An offer only comes when a vacancy actually opens. LRDE has been transparent about this — being empanelled is a good outcome, but it’s not the same as being selected.
If selected, your antecedents (background) will be verified again before joining. Keep your documents in order.
No travel allowance (TA) or daily allowance (DA) is paid for attending the interview or for joining, regardless of whether you’re selected. Factor in your travel and accommodation costs independently.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GATE mandatory for M.Tech candidates? No. If you have a first-division B.Tech AND a first-division M.Tech in the relevant discipline, GATE is not required. GATE is only mandatory for the B.Tech-only route.
My GATE score is from 2023 — is it still valid? GATE scores are typically valid for 3 years. A 2023 score would be valid through 2026. Double-check your GATE scorecard for the exact validity date before applying.
Can ECE or IT graduates apply for the CSE vacancy? The advertisement specifies CSE only. Contact LRDE directly at 080-25025312 (Monday to Friday, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM) to clarify if your branch qualifies before sending your willingness email.
I’m currently working in a private company. Do I need an NOC? NOC is required only for candidates employed in Government Departments, Autonomous Bodies, or PSUs. Private sector employees don’t need one.
What if I can’t attend on 9 June? Can I reschedule? This is a walk-in interview — there’s no rescheduling. If you can’t attend on 9 June 2026, you’ll need to wait for the next advertisement cycle.
Will LRDE reply to my willingness email? Not necessarily. Sending the email is your confirmation of intent. Assume you’re expected to appear on 9 June unless LRDE specifically communicates otherwise.
Does this JRF lead to a permanent DRDO job? No. LRDE has explicitly stated the fellowship carries no absorption rights. For a permanent Scientist role in DRDO, you’d need to appear for the Scientist ‘B’ recruitment examination separately.
