A lot of people confuse this with the Inlaks “Study Abroad” scholarship. Let’s be clear: this fellowship is for social work in India. It gives you the financial security to pause a traditional career and dive into things like community rights or ecological research. If you’ve already applied for the 2026 cycle, you’re probably waiting for an update—and I have some news on that below.

Important Dates (Where are we now?)
The application window for the 2026 cycle closed on December 31, 2025. If you submitted your form, here is the timeline for what happens next:
| Event | Expected Timeline |
| Shortlisted Candidates Notified | Late February 2026 (Check your email now!) |
| Final Interviews (Mumbai) | March 2026 |
| Final Selection Announcement | Late March 2026 |
| Fellowship Start Date | May 1, 2026 |
Pro Tip: If you haven’t received an email by the end of February, don’t lose heart. Sometimes the “Category X” notifications take a few extra days to process.
Can you still apply if you missed it?
Since the December deadline has passed, the portal is closed for new applications for 2026. However, you should start preparing now for the 2027 cycle which usually opens in late 2026.
-
Age Limit: You must be born on or after January 1, 1990.
-
Education: A Bachelor’s degree is preferred, but if you don’t have one, 3 years of relevant work experience is also accepted.
The Monthly Stipend
Inlaks provides a monthly “survive and thrive” allowance so you can focus 100% on your social project. The amount depends on where you are working:
-
Category X (Metros like Mumbai/Delhi): ₹45,000 / month
-
Category Y (Medium Cities): ₹35,000 / month
-
Category Z (Rural/Small Towns): ₹25,000 / month
What kind of projects do they support?
This isn’t for typical NGO jobs. Inlaks loves “unconventional” and “independent” ideas.
-
Grassroots Journalism: Reporting on issues that big media ignores.
-
Public Health: Working on community-level health awareness.
-
Environment: Ecological efforts or conservation projects.
-
Dying Arts: Reviving or documenting local languages, culture, or heritage.
-
Legal Advocacy: Cause-lawyering for community rights.
Common Mistakes People Make
-
Enrolling in PhD: You cannot be enrolled in any academic degree or PhD during the fellowship. It’s for full-time social engagement only.
-
Organizational Work: This is to support individual learning. If you are just doing a regular job at an NGO, they might reject the proposal. It has to be your designed project.
-
The “Fancy” SOP: Don’t write like a textbook. They want to hear your real voice and why you care about the problem you’ve chosen.
